"The Bowhead Whales" is the sixth episode of Season 2 of Octonauts.

Summary[]

When the Octonauts are unable to rescue a group of narwhals trapped behind arctic ice, they recruit a bowhead whale to help them break through.

Plot[]

The Octonauts are recording sounds with the Octopod’s microphone when suddenly three bowhead whales arrive. Shellington explains that bowhead whales live only in the Arctic and their hard and huge heads can smash through just about anything, which astonishes Kwazii. Dashi picks up a recording of the bowheads singing a song. When the whales leave, Dashi picks up a distress signal coming from narwhals. Barnacles, Kwazii, and Peso head over to check it out.

The three arrive to a giant avalanche where Boris and two other narwhals are trapped. Boris explains that he and his friends were swimming when the ice collapsed and it's too thick for them to punch through. And he and his friends are running out of air. Barnacles sounds the Octo-Alert and has Dashi come with a Gup.

Dashi comes with the Gup-C and a breathing tube, allowing the narwhals to breathe while they break the ice to free them. She activates the Gup's icebreaker, but not a crack forms. Barnacles calls Tweak to come in the Gup-D to drill through, but that doesn't work either, but it makes her dizzy and the breathing tube breaks. The Octonauts begin brainstorming ideas on what they could do: Dashi suggests a blowtorch, but Barnacles says it would take too long; Shellington suggests a sonic slicer, but Barnacles says the ice is too thick; Kwazii says he has an old pirate cannon under his bed, but remembers he is out of cannonballs. Eventually, Tunip suggests the bowhead whales, which they agree.

Dashi uses her recording to call the whales, and they work with Shellington and the Vegimals to bust the narwhals out of the ice. After three head rams, they succeed in breaking the ice so the narwhals can swim to the surface and breathe. After the narwhals thank the bowhead whales for busting them free, they leave.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first time a breathing tube is seen and used.
